Cardinal Christian Wiyghan Tumi was born in Kikaikelaki, Cameroon, on October 15, 1930. On April 17, 1966, he was ordained to the priesthood. He was ordained bishop of Yagoua on January 6, 1980. On November 19, 1982, he became coadjutor archbishop of Garoua, and then archbishop in 1984, serving as such until 1991. He was created a cardinal on June 28, 1988, and was assigned the titular church of the Martyrs of Uganda (a Poggio Ameno). From 31 August 1991 until 17 November 2009 he served as Archbishop of Douala. He was also a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, the Council Cor Unum, and the Council for Culture.
