Cardinal Adam Joseph Maida was born in East Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, on March 18, 1930. He was ordained a priest of the Pittsburgh diocese on May 26, 1956. On January 25, 1984, he was ordained bishop of Green Bay, Wisconsin. He was appointed Archbishop of Detroit, Michigan, on April 28, 1990, and installed on June 12, 1990. On November 26, 1994, he was created a cardinal. His titular church is Sts. Vitalis, Valeria, Gervase and Protase. On 14 July 2000, he was appointed Superior of the Cayman Islands, Antilles. He has served in the Congregation for the Clergy, the Congregation for Catholic Education, the Council for Migrants and Itinerant Peoples, and the Institute for Works of Religion. On 5 January 2009, he retired as Archbishop of Detroit and Superior of the Cayman Islands, Antilles.
