Cardinal Henryk Roman Gulbinowicz was born on October 17, 1923, in Szukiszki, Poland. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 18, 1950. On February 8, 1970, he was ordained titular bishop of Acci and apostolic administrator of Polish territory in the Lithuanian archdiocese of Vilnius (Vilna). He became archbishop of Wroclaw, Poland, on January 3, 1976. He was created a cardinal on May 25, 1985. His titular church is Immaculate Conception of Mary (a Grottarosa). He retired as Archbishop of Wroclaw 3 April 2004. In the Roman Curia, he is a member of the Congregation for Oriental Churches.
