Cardinal Friedrich Wetter was born on February 20, 1928, in Landau, Germany. On October 10, 1953, he was ordained to the priesthood. On June 29, 1968, he was ordained bishop of Speyer. He became archbishop of Munich and Freising on October 28, 1982. He was created a cardinal on May 25, 1985. His titular church is St. Stephen (al Monte Celio). He is Archbishop emeritus of Munich and Freising and continues as Apostolic Administrator. He is a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education and the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
