Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala was born in Kamaggwa, Uganda, on December 15, 1926. On December 21, 1957, he was ordained to the priesthood. He was ordained bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana on November 22, 1981. On June 21, 1988, he became coadjutor archbishop of Kampala, and was raised to that see on February 8, 1990. On November 26, 1994, he was created a cardinal, and assigned the titular church of St. Hugh. He is Archbishop emeritus of Kampala. He is a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Council Cor Unum.
