Cardinal Silvano Piovanelli was born on February 21, 1924, in Ronta di Mugello, Italy. He was ordained a priest on July 13, 1947. On June 24, 1982, he was ordained titular bishop of Tubune di Mauretania and auxiliary bishop of Florence. He became archbishop of Florence in 1983, and served as such until 2001. He was created a cardinal on May 25, 1985. His titular church is St. Mary of Graces (Via Trionfale). He retired as the Archbishop of Florence on 21 March 2001.
