Cardinal Achille Silvestrini was born on October 25, 1923, in Brisighella, Italy. On July 13, 1946, he was ordained to the priesthood. In 1953, he became an official in the Secretariat of State. He was ordained titular bishop of Novaliciana, with the personal title of archbishop, on May 27, 1979. He served as undersecretary (1973-1979) and secretary (1979-1988) of the Council for the Public Affairs of the Church (which is now the second section of the Secretariat of State). He was created a cardinal on June 28, 1988, and was given the title of deacon of St. Benedict Outside St. Paul's Gate. On January 9, 1999, he was promoted to the order of cardinal priests. From 1988 until 1991, he served as prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, and from 1991 until 2001, as prefect of the Congregation for Oriental Churches. He was Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Oriental Institute. He is Prefect emeritus of the Congregation for Oriental Churches. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation of Bishops, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Congregation for Catholic Education, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, the Council for Christian Unity, the Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts, and the Council for Interrelgious Dialogue.
