Cardinal Giovanni Cheli was born on October 4, 1918, in Turin, Italy. He was ordained a priest on June 21, 1942. He entered the Secretariat of State and diplomatic service. From 1952 to 1955, he served as second secretary and as apostolic nunciature in Guatemala. He served as first secretary and apostolic nunciature in Madrid, Spain, from 1955 to 1962. From 1962 to 1967, he served as counselor and apostolic nunciature in Rome. He was in the Council for Public Affairs of the Church (Vatican City) from 1967 to 1973. From 1973 to 1986 he was permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations. He was ordained titular bishop of Giusta on September 16, 1978. From 1986 to 1998, he served as President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People. He was created a cardinal on February 21, 1998. He is titular Deacon in the church of Sts. Cosmas and Damian. He is President emeritus of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People.
