Cardinal Jorge Arturo Medina EstÚvez was born in Santiago, Chile, on December 23, 1926. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 12, 1954. On January 6, 1985, he was ordained archbishop of Santiago, Chile. He served as pro-prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments from 1996 until 1998. He became that congregation's prefect in 1998. On February 21, 1998, he was created a cardinal. He is titular Deacon of St. Sabas. He retired as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, 1 October 2002. He is also a member of the Congregation of the Bishops, the Congregation for the Clergy, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Council for the Family, the Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts, and the Office of the Economic Affairs of the Holy See.
